Asplenium bulbiferum

Common names:

  • Hen & Chicken

This is the NZ native species, most garden stores sell Asplenium bulbiferum x Lucrosum, which doesn't produce viable spores (but can still reproduce through chickens). The chickens are baby ferns that grow on the tips of the parent (hen) fern. It will look ratty of exposed to the wind. Requires shade.

The young shoots are edible, steaming is suggested.
